AI Finds New Antibiotics: A New Era of Medicine

Less than 100 years ago, it was thought if you had a bacterial infection or disease, the only hope left for a person was for the body to beat it. In the twenty-first century, this is no longer the case. The rapid evolution of technologies has created a new era of medicine. From penicillin in the 1920s to now using AI to search databases for potential antibiotics, numerous new ways to help people have risen up.

On June 5, 2024, Penn Medicine News published an article explaining the abilities of artificial intelligence and what more could be done. The article, “Largest-ever antibiotic discovery effort uses AI to uncover potential cures in microbial dark matter” by Eric Horvath explains that they have let machine learning which is a form of AI search their databases to uncover new antibiotics.

The future is still unknown to the potential AI can have on the medical field. This is a new beginning and there is only room for more discoveries. Artificial intelligence is a tool that will permanently change and shape our eyes in front of us, just as it is slowly evolving the rate of discovering antibiotics.
